7745th Security Council Meeting: Situation Concerning Iraq
The Security Council today extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) until 31 July 2017, emphasizing the importance of efforts to support the country’s stabilization, particularly those areas liberated from Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh).
Unanimously adopting resolution 2299 (2016), at Iraq’s request, the Council decided that UNAMI and the Secretary-General’s Special Representative would continue to pursue their mandates, as outlined in resolution 2233 (2015). It called upon Iraq to continue to provide security and logistical support to the United Nations presence, and on Member States to provide the Mission with sufficient resources and support. The Council expressed its intention to review UNAMI’s mandate in one year or sooner, if requested by the Government of Iraq.
Speaking after the action, Egypt’s representative said his delegation supported the military, financial and logistical support provided by the international community, including Kuwait, which had called for a delay in the payment of Iraq’s national debt, in accordance with resolution 1483 (2003), owing to that Government’s many obligations. Resolution 1483 (2003) calls for 5 per cent of Iraq’s national oil revenues to be deposited into the national compensation fund created under resolution 687 (1991).
The meeting began at 3:05 p.m. and ended at 3:09 p.m.
