The President of the Security Council Koro Bessho told reporters today (26 Jul) “the Security Council welcomes the progress so far made by all sides for the return of full functionality of MINURSO.”
The Security Council was briefed by the UN Peacekeeping Chief Hervé Ladsous and UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Western Sahara Kim Bolduc, on the situation surrounding UN Mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO), in accordance of resolution 2085.
Bessho added “the Security Council expresses strong hope that this goal that I mentioned the return to full functionality of MINURSO can be reached as soon as possible.”
He said “many members also pointed to the importance of the resumption of direct negotiation towards a political solution that will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.”
The 2085 resolution renewed MINURSO’s mandate and emphasized the urgent need for the mission to return to full functionality following Morocco’s expulsion of civilian staff members in March this year.
