The Security Council today extended the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for six months, until 31 January 2017, encouraging the country’s Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to grasp with determination the current opportunity to secure a comprehensive and durable settlement of the crisis dividing their island nation.

Unanimously adopting resolution 2300 (2016), the 15-member Council also urged implementation of confidence-building measures, saying it looked forward to agreement on further steps, including military confidence-building measures and the opening of already-agreed crossing points.

By other terms of the text, the Council welcomed all efforts to accommodate exhumation requirements of the Committee on Missing Persons, and called upon all parties to provide more expeditious and full access to all areas, given the need to intensify the Committee’s work.

Also by the text, the Council called on both sides to facilitate the removal of mines remaining within the buffer zone between them, urging them also to extend demining operations outside that zone. It also called on both sides to continue to engage in consultations with UNFICYP on the demarcation of the buffer zone.
