The United Nations Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) until 12 August 2016, and authorized UNMISS to use all necessary means to carry out its tasks.
Speaking to the delegates in New York today (29 Jul), US ambassador Samantha Power said “the renew of the conflict in Juba was also foreseeable because of the inability of the South Sudan leaders to work together and put the interest of the people of South Sudan ahead of their own.”
On contributing reginal forces to enhance UNMISS’s capacities in Juba, Power said the regions’ proposal “offers a basis to re-establish a secured environment in Juba, which is critical for the parties to make progress on implementing of the peace agreement they signed onto almost a year ago, as well as to ensure the unfettered delivery of humanitarian aid to those we are in great risk of famine.”
Addressing the urgent need to resolve the ongoing conflict, she said “let us not be fooled into believing that the time is on our side. It is not. Events in recent weeks have demonstrated how quickly violence can re-ignite and how devastating are the human consequences when it does.”
