Storyline

For the first time in history, a Refugee Olympic Team will compete in the Olympics to represent the more than 21.3 million refugees around the world. The team was officially welcomed by IOC members in their members’ session in Rio de Janeiro.

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Bach, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President:
“This is the beginning of a journey, because after the Olympic Games have closed, we will of course continue to support the Olympic Refugee athletes and we will help them in sport and in life.”

Ten refugee athletes were chosen from across the world to represent the 60 million others who share their story.

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Bach, IOC President:
“With the creation of this Refugee Olympic Team, as I said yesterday, we wanted to send a signal of hope to all refugees in the world.”

Refugee athletes, Yusra Mardini from Syria (swimming), Pur Biel from South Sudan (athletics) and the rest of the team shook hands with IOC president Thomas Bach.

Pur is from South Sudan. After war separated him from his parents, he fled to Kenya alone.

He doesn’t know where his family is or whether they’re aware of his Olympic triumph.

SOUNDBITE (English) Pur Biel, Refugee Olympic Team Athlete:
“We don’t have parents or any relatives in our lives, but now we are belonging to a community.
We are now feeling to be human being, to have the feeling of being a human.”

Swimmer Yusra, fled war in Syria. To survive, she pushed a sinking boat for more than three hours and is now a refugee in Germany.

The 2016 Rio Olympics opening ceremony will take place on Friday (5 Aug)
