2. Wide shot, severely diminished water source
3. Wide shot, carcass lying on the drying water source
4. Wide shot, men digging water reservoir while women await to carry away soil in buckets
5. Med shot, men digging water reservoir
6. Wide shot, women dumping dug up soil nearby
7. Wide shot, the construction area
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Tito Bonde, Emergency and Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist, UNICEF:
“We’re in Tingonhamen community and this is an example of the impact of drought on the community. Not only impacts water in terms of access but also the quality of water. So this is a community that is digging the reservoir in anticipation that there will be some rain and they can catch some water.”
9. Wide shot, carcass lying in the little water left
10. Wide shot, woman drawing water from water source in distance with clear view of carcass lying in the water
11. Wide shot, dog eating a carcass with a woman in background carrying away water
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Tito Bonde, Emergency and Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist, UNICEF:
“The quality of the water is not good. You have dead animal within the water. But also you have the community trying to access the same water because that’s their only source of water left in the community.”
13. Wide shot, water truck supported by UNICEF arriving at nearby school
14. Wide shot, water truck backing closer to the water tank for filling
15. Wide shot, workers preparing to fill water tank
16. Wide shot, water tank filling
17. Wide shot, worker cranking the water pump to start filling
18. SOUNDBITE (English) Tito Bonde, Emergency and Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist, UNICEF:
“Currently we are actually providing water trucking in this community and that’s to compensate for lack of access to safe and quality water. And with more resources then we’ll be not only able to provide water trucking, but to do deep borehole drilling or multi-functional water system that can also provide water for household use but also for the livestock so they can have access to water.”
19. Wide shot, school kids washing hands from make-shift gravity water bottles
20. Wide shot, sign of government constructed water reservoir near Chokwe, Gaza District.
21. Wide shot, fenced dry water reservoir

The southern African region is experiencing the worst El Niño-induced drought in 35 years. The drought in a Tingonhamen community in Gaza, Mozambique not only impacts water in terms of access but also the quality of water.
With the support from UNICEF, the community takes initiative to construct a water reservoir in anticipation for the rain.
Speaking about constructing the water reservoir, Tito Bonde, a UNICEF Emergency and Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist said “this is a community that is digging the reservoir in anticipation that there will be some rain and they can catch some water.”
Expressing the concern of potential health problems, he said “the quality of the water is not good. You have dead animal within the water. But also you have the community trying to access the same water because that’s their only source of water left in the community.”
Speaking about using water trucking to compensate the lack of safe water in the community, he said “with more resources then we’ll be not only able to provide water trucking, but to do deep borehole drilling or multi-functional water system that can also provide water for household use but also for the livestock so they can have access to water.”
El Niño is the term used to describe the warming of the central to eastern tropical Pacific that occurs, on average, every three to seven years. It raises sea surface temperatures and impacts weather systems around the globe so that some places receive more rain while others receive none at all, often in a reversal of their usual weather pattern.
