Storyline

The United Nations (UN) along with the government of Uganda appealed to donors to speed up contributions for the humanitarian response to end a funding shortage that has forced a revision of survival rations for refugees in Uganda.

UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told the reporters today (17 Aug) in New York that around 200,000 refugees who arrived in Uganda prior to July 2015 will have their food rations or cash assistance reduced by 50 per cent starting this week.

Noting that over 70,000 South Sudanese refugees have crossed the border in to Uganda after the latest fighting in Juba, Haq said the lack of funding, together with the new arrivals have “left the refugee response no choice but to re-prioritize their focus on the refugees in greatest need.”
