Storyline

A top United Nations (UN) official in South Sudan today (18 Aug) said that the 11 July attack at the Hotel Terrain in Juba where one person was killed and several civilians were raped and beaten by men in uniform, was “truly deplorable” and perpetrators must be brought to justice.

Eugene Owusu, who is the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan said “that incident was despicable, to say the least.”

Owusu said “all people, all of us, partners, government, South Sudanese, international community, should come together to condemn this.”

Most importantly, he said “we cannot allow impunity to prevail.” He called upon the government of South Sudan “to thoroughly investigate this deplorable incident and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

On Wednesday, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced he will launch an independent special investigation to examine this and other incidents and evaluate the overall response by the UN mission there.
