“More than 3.5 million Syrian children under the age of 5 know nothing but displacement, violence and uncertainty. Some 306, 000 children were born as refugees in neighboring countries. We estimate that 8.4 million Syrian children are in need of humanitarian aid in Syria and in neighbouring countries.”

“Access to safe water in Aleppo continues to deteriorate in the past two weeks. The situation is particularly worsening for civilians living in the eastern parts of the city, where taps have gone dry and families have no safe water through the public network. At least 100,000 children living in the eastern part of the city are facing danger of outbreaks of water borne diseases”.

“Heavy fighting and the escalation in violence since 4 August is preventing technicians from repairing the severely damaged electricity and water systems in the city. UNICEF was able to deliver 300,000 litres of fuel to operate generators for water pumping stations and ground wells in the western part of the city.”

As haunting images of child casualties in Syria go viral over the internet, UNICEF reminded journalists of the, “over 3.5 million Syrian children under the age of five know nothing but displacement, violence and uncertainty.”
UNICEF spokesperson Christophe Boulierac told reporters today (19 Aug) in Geneva that, “some 306, 000 children were born as refugees in neighbouring countries.” Adding that an estimated “8.4 million Syrian children are in need of humanitarian aid in Syria and in neighboring countries.”
On limited access to safe water continuing to deteriorate over the last two weeks, Boulierac said “the situation is particularly worsening for civilians living in the eastern parts of the city, where taps have gone dry and families have no safe water through the public network. The UNICEF comments came following worldwide media focus on the video of Omran Dagneesh, the five-year-old Syrian boy covered with dust and blood who got rescued on Wednesday from a destroyed building in Aleppo.
More than 2 million Syrian children are living in besieged or hard-to-reach areas. UNICEF estimates that of the 592,000 people living under siege in Syria, at least 260,000 are children.
