3. SOUNDBITE (English) Zade Dirani, UNICEF Regional Ambassador to the Middle East and North Africa: “Music is an international language and music is a language of love, of hope. Like what we just saw earlier today, I think this is one of the most powerful experiences I’ve had for all these years performing. It really shows you, no matter how much distress, there’s always hope, there’s always a brighter tomorrow, there is always a better day. And I could see it in these kids. They are like “yes, we are going to make something out of ourselves. And you can tell it. And that’s life, that’s the beauty of life, that’s the will of life.”

“The feeling was very deep, the many children with big smiles when they were listening to the music, when they were listening to the Arabic beats. It was a special feeling to me that I will never forget all my life as music brings joy even for a short time to everyone’s heart.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Zade Dirani, UNICEF Regional Ambassador to the Middle East and North Africa: “When you are in the field and see the faces of the children, and all the families, the living situation, and the condition at this time of history. It really shows you the importance of all the humanitarian effort, the call for the countries to come together to put an end to this crisis. It should not be possible for this crisis to continue.”

The newly appointed UNICEF Regional Ambassador for the Middle East and North Africa Zade Dirani, made his first field visit to Za’atari refugee camp and nearby town of Mafraq in Jordan to bring music and a message of hope to children, including those who have fled war and violence in Syria.
Speaking about his unforgettable experience playing piano with refugee children, Dirani said “music is an international language” and “a language of love, of hope”, adding that “it really shows you, no matter how much distress, there is always hope, there is always a brighter tomorrow, there is always a better day. And I could see it in these kids. They are like “yes, we are going to make something out of ourselves. And you can tell it. And that is life, that is the beauty of life, that is the will of life.”
He added “the feeling was very deep. Many of the children have big smiles when they were listening to the music, when they were listening to the Arabic beats. It was a special feeling to me that I will never forget all my life as music brings joy to everyone’s heart, even just for a short time.”
After seeing the living situation and condition of the refugee families, Dirani said “it really shows you the importance of all the humanitarian efforts, the call for the countries to come together to put an end to this crisis. It should not be possible for this crisis to continue.”
During his visit, Dirani visited a UNICEF supported “Makani” centre where children were provided with learning opportunities, life skills and psychological support. In another “Makani” centre in Mafraq, he played piano and met with the marginalized children who came for education.
Makani – Arabic for My Space – is an innovative approach developed by UNICEF and funded through the European Union to address the needs of Syrian refugee children and youth as well as vulnerable host communities.
