Storyline

The head of the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) Virginia Gamba handed the latest report on the use of chemical weapons in Syria over to the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The Joint Investigative Mechanism was established by the Security Council in August 2015 under resolution 2235. It was tasked with identifying “to the greatest extent feasible individuals, entities, groups, or Governments who were perpetrators, organizers, sponsors or otherwise involved in the use of chemicals as weapons, including chlorine or any other toxic chemical, in the Syrian Arab Republic.”

The report outlined investigations into selected cases of alleged chemical weapons use in Syria. The office of the Secretary-General handed over the report to the Security Council which is expected to consider it on the 30th of August. The report will be released to the public shortly after that.
