Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (24 Aug) said the latest launch of a ballistic missile, fired from a submarine by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) is “deeply troubling.”

Dujarric said that “not only are such actions a clear violation of relevant Security Council resolutions, but they also undermine peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula.”

He urged the DPRK “to take steps necessary to de-escalate the situation and return to dialogue on denuclearization.”

According to news reports, the missile was fired off the eastern DPRK coastal town of Sinpo and flew for about 500 kilometers.

The Security Council will hold closed consultations later today on this matter.
