“The thing that I will never forget is the stadium, the opening ceremony. I remember it was so nice, so wonderful, because I remember when we enter as the refugees, we were really cheered by many people.”

“Now I have passion for running because although I was not running for a long time, I got something which can change my life. This one is not only for my family, because I left them a long time ago, almost twelve years now, but now this one it gives me whereby now I can continue to achieve or to leave a legacy to other people.”

“I will continue with sports and at least I have to make my future bright when I work hard because right now I am looking forward to support my family.”

They captivated the world as the first ever team of refugees to compete at the Olympics. Their courage and resilience won them millions of fans. Despite returning to their countries of refuge, the experience changed their lives forever.
Angelina Nadai Lohalith was one of two female distance athletes on the team. In Rio she ran in the 1500 metre race. It was the first time Angelina had ever travelled outside of Africa.
It was an unforgettable experience.

The five South Sudanese runners have returned to the high altitude training camp in Kenya where their Olympic journey began.
For Yiech Pur Biel, the Olympics gave him more than just the opportunity to compete against the world’s best athletes. It inspired him to pursue his dreams.

Angelina fled South Sudan when she was six years old because of the war. She was now determined to make a better life for herself and her family.

These young runners made history at Rio 2016, for themselves and the millions of refugees around the world. The Olympic Games in Rio were just the first chapter in their story.
