UN refugee chief Filippo Grandi visited South Sudanese refugees in Uganda on Monday (29 Aug) and urged the leaders of South Sudan to “behave responsibly and not continue to ignore the plight of their own people.”
Escaping from the recent violence in the capital city Juba, South Sudanese refugee Taban Arikaangjelo said “I was actually chased and shot almost too. But I sneaked, I escaped narrowly. That made me actually decide to run away to save my life from the trouble that had taken place from our place.”
Uganda is hosting more than 600,000 refugees, about half are from South Sudan. The country provides refugees with plots of land, allowing them to build homes, grow food and earn income.
Paying tribute to Uganda’s hospitality, Grandi said “nowhere in the world have I seen, and I have been in many refugee situations, nowhere in the world have I seen people settled with land, with shelter in less than two months.”
Uganda is hosting the highest number of refugees in its history. Nearly 90,000 refugees from South Sudan have crossed the border since renewed conflict broke out in July between government and rebels forces in the young nation.
