Storyline

As Pope Francis denounced the violence committed in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Apostolic Nuncio in that country today (31 Aug) visited Rwangoma Village, in Beni, scene of the latest massacre.

After offering a prayer for the victims “for reconciliation and for peace," Monsignor Luis Mariano Montemayor said "I could not postpone this visit anymore, to show my solidarity with the victims, the most affected people, the people of Beni.”

The 13 August violence, in which 51 people died, was allegedly perpetrated by armed elements belonging to the Ugandan rebels of the Alliance of Democratic Forces (ADF).

Local resident Narcisse Kasereka said the UN mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) “has to protect us because MONUSCO is strong and we cannot be sacrificed like abandoned people.”

The Head of MONUSCO, Maman Sambo Sidikou, said "speeches, compassion, they are not enough” and added that the mission must work with the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) “in a very close manner and adopt a different strategy.”

He said “we are counting dead people every two or three months, and this cannot continue."

In the past two years ago, more than 1,150 people have been killed and kidnapped in North Kivu, with thousands more displaced.
