“The discussions – and you are aware of it - in this building while we are talking and while we are meeting, are ongoing at the very senior military security and diplomatic level between the Russian Federation officers at the very senior level and American officers and representatives. They are taking place since yesterday and they are ongoing until probably Friday or Saturday morning.”
4. Med shot, OCHA spokesperson
5. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Jan Egeland, Special Advisor to the UN Special Envoy for Syria:
“The taskforce failed the people of Daraya, we all failed the people of Daraya, I feel I failed them, and it is really sad to think of what they went through over these years. There are now an urgent please from communities in Al-Waer, in Madamia, in Madaya and in Foua and Kafraya to break the sieges of those places. They all fear for their future, and we need to break the sieges. A siege is not broken by the population giving up after starvation and after bombing, a siege is lifted by humanitarian access and freedom of movement in and out by the civilian population.”

7. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Jan Egeland, Special Advisor to the UN Special Envoy for Syria:
“Probably the largest humanitarian operation on earth is available in and around Syria for the population. There are many trucks moving every single day to the areas where we have access. 590 trucks cross border, 590 trucks cross border in the month of August.”

9.SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Staffan de Mistura, UN Special Envoy for Syria:
“While you are seeing in both Jan and me and my colleagues in Damascus and in New York and elsewhere, not only in Geneva, a strong feeling of outrage frankly and of disappointment, what you should know: the more we see that happening, the more determined we are in not abandoning or letting the Syrian people down. So don’t interpret that any of those events - which are terrible and are sad - as an indication that the UN, ourselves, are by any way saying we are giving up on the Syrian people and on a solution.”

The United Nations (UN) special advisor to the special envoy for Syria Jan Egeland told the reporters today (1 Sep) “the taskforce failed the people of Daraya, we all failed the people of Daraya”.
Egeland, along with the UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura briefed the press in Geneva while Russian and American high level military and diplomatic representatives were meeting.
De Mistura told reporters that, “the discussions – and you are aware of it - in this building while we are talking and while we are meeting, are ongoing at the very senior military security and diplomatic level between the Russian Federation officers at the very senior level and American officers and representatives. They are taking place since yesterday and they are ongoing until probably Friday or Saturday morning.”
On the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in Syria, Egeland said “the taskforce failed the people of Daraya, we all failed the people of Daraya, I feel I failed them, and it is really sad to think of what they went through over these years. There are now an urgent please from communities in Al-Waer, in Madamia, in Madaya and in Foua and Kafraya to break the sieges of those places.”
Egeland added “a siege is not broken by the population giving up after starvation and after bombing, a siege is lifted by humanitarian access and freedom of movement in and out by the civilian population.”
Emphasizing that “the largest humanitarian operation on earth is available in and around Syria for the population." he said "there are many trucks moving every single day to the areas where we have access. 590 trucks cross border, 590 trucks cross border in the month of August.”
13 million people in Syria are in need of humanitarian support and aid convoys are routinely blocked from reaching them. De Mistura said “while you are seeing in both Jan and me and my colleagues in Damascus and in New York and elsewhere, not only in Geneva, a strong feeling of outrage frankly and of disappointment, what you should know: the more we see that happening, the more determined we are in not abandoning or letting the Syrian people down. So don’t interpret that any of those events - which are terrible and are sad - as an indication that the UN, ourselves, are by any way saying we are giving up on the Syrian people and on a solution.”
