"The Assembly has set in motion a process that is shining greater light onto what has been a largely opaque process. The informal dialogues with candidates have helped Member States get a good sense of their visions and views and has enabled the world’s people to feel more involved in the process -- as they should be. Whatever happens in the weeks ahead, this newly open process has set a new standard from which there should be no retreat."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Mogens Lykketoft, President of the General Assembly:
“It has been a surprise for me – as I think it has been for many others – that the female candidates haven’t done better in the straw polls up until now, because we had this very huge conversation about the possibility of getting the first ever female Secretary-General. But I think also in this audience we have talked about before, there are no rules and regulations whatsoever in the United Nations about gender or geographical rotation.”

The General Assembly wrapped up its 70th session today (13 Sep), with the new President, Peter Thomson, making a case for the sustainable development agenda.
Thomson, from Fiji, presented his two granddaughters and said "Grace is 7 years old and Mirabelle is 5. That means when the remaining fourteen years of the sustainable development agenda had expired and the year 2030 is upon them, they will be young adults ready to fulfil the potential of their lives."
Thomson received the gavel from outgoing President Mogens Lykketoft, a Danish national.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted that the Assembly, led by Lykketoft, has set in motion “a process that is shining greater light, on what has largely been and “opaque process” - the choice of his successor.
Lykketoft, who made a priority to establish transparency and influence from the general membership on the selection of the next Secretary-General, later spoke to reporters.
He expressed surprise that so far in the straw polls leading to the election of the new Secretary-General, female candidates have fared poorly.
He said “it has been a surprise for me – as I think it has been for many others – that the female candidates haven’t done better in the straw polls up until now, because we had this very huge conversation about the possibility of getting the first ever female Secretary-General. But I think also in this audience we have talked about before, there are no rules and regulations whatsoever in the United Nations about gender or geographical rotation.”
Made up of all the 193 Member States of the UN, the General Assembly provides a forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the UN Charter. It meets in regular session intensively from September to December each year, and thereafter as required.
