If it does not stand with those people who are struggling for freedom, dignity, justice, and equality, there could never be any peace.”

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon rang the peace bell today (16 Sep) at headquarters in New York marking the International Day of Peace.
UN Messengers of Peace actors Michael Douglas and Leonardo DiCaprio along with musician Stevie Wonder and primatologist Jane Goodall were there to honour the day.
Michael Douglas fired up the audience while Jane Goodall gave her greeting “gorilla call.”
Stevie Wonder said the future of the world is in your hands and that peace must be travelled with “grace and respect.”
Leonardo Di Caprio quoted Mahatma Ghandi, who said, “a small body of determined spirits followed by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history. “
Later on at an interview, Nobel Prize Laureate Tawakkol Karman from Yemen spoke about “the revolutionaries of the Arab Spring will never tire to achieve their goals.”
The Yemeni rights activist said they knew that the price of freedom is very high and what the region was now facing was counter revolutions. She said throughout history, every great revolution was followed by a “counter revolution” and Arab Spring revolutionaries knew this. She said if the international community did not stand with those people “who are struggling for freedom, dignity, justice, and equality, there could never be any peace.”
Every year, the UN calls on warring parties around the world to observe a 24-hour ceasefire.
The Day was established in 1981 by the UN General Assembly. Two decades later in 2001, the Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and ceasefire.
The UN invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.
