Myanmar’s foreign minister Aung San Suu Kyi said by achieving a free and secure democratic society, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be achieved in her country as well.

Speaking to delegates at an event for the 2030 Agenda today (20 Sep), Aung San Suu Kyi said that democracy means striking the right balance between security and freedom, adding that “we want our people, all those in every sector of our society to be convinced that the way of democracy, because it simply means the way of people. It is a people centred system that is the best.” She said winning the election was a small event in the life of a nation adding, "if we really believe in democracy, what we are working towards is a society where people are free and secure.”

The Foreign Minister said the National League for Democracy, over which she presides, sought a democratic route "not for the sake of a political system, not for the sake of a changing government, but for the sake of the peoples of our country and through them, the people of the world. Because we share the same concerns, the same needs, we share the same belief that we can change the world that we live.”

Suu Kyi was previously under house arrest for several years before being able to run for parliamentary elections in 2012. She was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her non-violent struggle for democracy in Myanmar.
