3. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen O'Brien United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs:
“Anticipating the battle around Mosul, it is very important, with that ability to predict, we have been able to try to get as prepared as possible. It is clear that the United nations and all the humanitarian partners, those who are in-country already with long practice and history of helping Iraqi people, and those who are coming in as new partners, are ready.”
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Lise Grande, Special Representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI):
“The humanitarian operation in Mosul is likely to be the single largest humanitarian operation in the world in 2016. In a worst case scenario, we expect that one million people are likely to flee Mosul in search of safety and assistance. The complexity of preparing for this operation is staggering.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Hesham Youssef, Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation:
“We have to ensure that those who are displaced can return in safety, and this is also an additional challenge, but now it has become clear to the international community what needs to be done by each and every party and we hope that we would be able to succeed. Because I think we cannot allow this effort to fail. Because the price of failure will be untenable.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Christos Stylianides, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid:
“The military operation to retake Mosul will be complex. We have to be ready for the humanitarian consequences of this fight which will be enormous. We can make the difference in Iraq only if we defeat hatred and division also on the ideological battlefield.”
