India’s foreign affairs minister announced that her country will submit ratification of the Paris Agreement on 2 October, the birth of Mahatma Gandhi “who epitomized a lifestyle with the smallest carbon footprint.”
Speaking at the annual high-level event of the General Assembly, Sushma Swaraj told delegates that in the Paris Agreement it was made clear that while the responsibility is common, obligations are different; adding that developed nations must discharge their responsibility in the search for the common good, with finance and technology transfer.
She noted India has launched an ambitious domestic effort to transform its energy mix to achieve 40% energy from non-fossil fuel sources by 2o3o. Swaraj also said “the massive investments required entail a predictable and stable environment towards which we are working actively.”
India accounts for around 4.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. The Paris Agreement asks both developed and developing countries to take action to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius.
