“It is a historic moment. Of course to be then embraced, or otherwise by the people of Colombia. But clearly, it is a pivotal moment for the country and we hope that whatever accrues, and clearly our Office supports, the UN supports any effort at peace keeping. Whatever accrues, then it contributes to the lessening of violations of human rights in the country. With our support we would support, we will hope we can ensure it is within the standards that we expect, international human rights standards and international human rights obligations as well.”

“We were very surprised to see that at the time the accords were finally agreed to there was considerable mention of OHCHR and this is an affirmation of the importance we will have in providing the sought of guarantees to, particularly FARC, to also help in terms of the movement of people out of the village zone. So, I think our role will be quite important. We will have to invest resources and seek resources from the donor community.”

Storyline

United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein commended Colombia's peace agreement between FARC and the government.

He called it a “pivotal moment” for the country and said “we hope that whatever accrues, then it contributes to the lessening of violations of human rights in the country.”

Zeid is on a six-day official visit to Colombia at the invitation of the government.

He will meet with local communities in Mampuján and Chocó, business leaders in Medellin, before ending his visit in the capital Bogota, where he will meet a number of high-level government and state officials.

Zeid said his office will support the process to ensure international human rights standards are observed.

Meanwhile, the General Agreement for the Termination of the Conflict and the Construction of a Stable and Lasting Peace was signed. The agreement sets out the terms for the end of the decades-long armed conflict with the FARC, through a definitive bilateral ceasefire and cessation of hostilities.
