5. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson, United Nations:
“Our position on the need for a ceasefire, for a cessation of hostilities, in Aleppo and all parts of Syria could not be clearer. Without such pause or cessation of hostilities we just cannot get the humanitarian aid that we need into eastern Aleppo and other places where civilians continue to be targeted and continue to suffer.”

Responding to reports that the United States (US) could end joint Syrian diplomacy, a UN spokesperson said the talks currently co-sponsored by Russia and the US were “crucial” to get a cessation of hostilities in place.
According to media reports, US Secretary of State John Kerry informed his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov of the his government’s intention to suspend bilateral talks on Syria if Russia did not take “immediate steps” to restore a ceasefire in the country.
Speaking to reporters today (28 Sep), UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said continued cooperation between the US and Russia was “crucial” to solving the five year conflict.
Asked on a French draft Security Council resolution for a ceasefire in Aleppo, Dujarric said he had not seen the text yet. He said the UN’s stance on the need for a ceasefire in Aleppo and all parts of Syria “could not be clearer.” The spokesperson added that without such a pause the UN could not get the humanitarian aid needed into eastern Aleppo and other places “where civilians continue to be targeted and continue to suffer.”
