Storyline

It has been one week since hurricane Matthew ravaged Haiti and the people in Jérémie are gradually picking up the pieces.

The town is located in the department of Grand'Anse and was the hardest hit by the storm.

Local authorities say that 80 percent of the houses have been destroyed in this town of just over 134,000 people.

Jean SENTIA Enel owns a small business with construction materials which suffered heavy losses during the hurricane. Ironically, selling construction material is very good business for him right now.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Jean Enel SENTIA, Jérémie local:
"What you see here is all I have left after the hurricane, and this is what allows me to resume work and to live. I have no other recourse, nor other income to increase my stock of goods because I have no economic means, I have no economy. "

Haiti's state electricity company is repairing its distribution network to restore electric power to the town.

Humanitarian aid is being distributed at centers where people can receive food rations.

To date, the Haitian government says there have been 473 deaths, 75 missing, 339 injured and more than 175,500 people relocated to temporary shelters. The government estimates that there are 1.4 million people who need urgent humanitarian assistance.
