Storyline

The International Criminal Court (ICC) found former vie-president of the Democratic Republic of Congo and four close aides guilty on charges of bribing witnesses during his trial for war crimes, which he was found guilty and is now serving 18 years in prison.

The ICC’s judgment was delivered today (19 Oct) during a public hearing in the presence of all five accused, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, Aimé Kilolo Musamba, Jean-Jacques Mangenda Kabongo, Fidèle Babala Wandu and Narcisse Arido.

After convicting the five men, presiding judge Bertram Schmitt said "no legal system in the world can accept the bribing of witnesses, the inducement of witnesses to lie or the illicit coaching of witnesses. Nor can the International Criminal Court."

He added, "Today's judgment sends the clear message that the court is not willing to allow its proceedings to be hampered or destroyed. It sends the message that those who try to distort and interfere with the administration of justice of this court do not go unpunished."

Earlier this year, Bemba was convicted and sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for commanding a militia that went on a deadly rampage in the Central African Republic in 2002-2003. He has appealed.
