Storyline

The United Nations (UN) regretted the lack of “adequate guarantees” that would allow for humanitarian assistance to reach besieged eastern Aleppo and urged all parties to facilitate “immediate and urgent medical evacuations of the sick and wounded and their family members.”

Speaking to reporters in New York today (24 Oct), UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said none of the planned medical evacuations were carried out over the weekend due to the lack of security guarantees from all parties. He said these were basic requirements under international humanitarian and human rights law, and compliance was an “obligation for all parties.”

Responding to a question on evacuations, Dujarric said that it could sometimes be done in a shorter amount of time than “rolling in” humanitarian trucks. He said UN personnel were in contact with all parties, adding that “it’s a more than multi-dimensional chess game; it’s a matter of making sure that all the stars are aligned for them to say ‘we can go ahead with this’ or ‘we can’t go ahead with this.’”
