The United Nations (UN) said that the humanitarian access to affected areas by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti is improving and called on all to respect the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Speaking to reporters in New York today (26 Oct), UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has sent 34 truckloads to Jeremie and Les Cayes. Some 28,000 families have already benefited from the assistance with another 13,000 families to receive critical supplies in the coming days. However, the $120 million flash appeal remains critically under-funded at just under 28 percent.”

Asked about an incident in the town of Dame-Marie which caused one civilian death and two injured, Dujarric said “the incident took place as the humanitarian assistance was offloaded for a ship. There was a demonstration and uncontrolled movements by the crowd upon the humanitarian aid led MINUSTAH and the Haitian national police to attempt to contain the potentially dangerous situation.”

He added “MINUSTAH used crowd control measures, including rubber bullets and the Haitian national police also participate in the crowd control separately.”

Dujarric said that MINUSTAH (United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti) extends its condolence to the victims and the family of the deceased. He called on all to respect the delivery of humanitarian aid.
