Storyline

More than 900 people including children arrived in Syria from Mosul in the last few weeks seeking refuge at Al Hol camp, 14 kilometers from the Iraqi border in Syria’s north-eastern Hasakeh Governorate.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said the total number of Iraqi refugees in Al-hol camp, including those arrived since April in 2016, reached nearly 4,600 people.

The newly arrived refugees are mostly mothers, children and elderly. Mothers arrived with large bags filled with clothes, while older children carried their younger siblings looking exhausted and weak from the long journey.

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has already installed 300 tents in Al-Hol camp to receive the refuges. Additional 1,000 tents are being set up to accommodate the displaced Iraqi families.

UNICEF will commence trucking water and installing water storage tanks in the camp; distribute hygiene kits, nutrition supplies to refugee families and provide psychosocial support services to children and their care-givers.
