Storyline

Living in a secure area inside Azraq camp, recently arrived refugees wait to be screened by the Jordanian authorities to join the rest of the Azraq community. Fatima and her family fled Syria a year ago. The family then spent six months in a makeshift camp along the Jordanian border.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fatima, Syrian refugee:
“I was pregnant. I felt really exhausted. I suffered a lot. I suffered from the dust, from the weather, it was very rainy. Our home was a tent.”

Fatima was taken to the Azraq refugee camp’s hospital.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fatima, Syrian refugee:
“The doctors helped me to come here. And made things easier for me. And took care of me and my baby.”

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi met with refugees who had recently arrived from the Berm.

SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner for Refugees, United Nations:
“Oh, because this baby was born here? So, luckily it was here.”

Fatima and her family now live in the camp’s secure area and are waiting to be screened by the Jordanian authorities.Over 6,000 people have been processed so far. But, thousands are waiting.

For Fatima and her family, there is safety here. But she’s worried about those stranded in the Berm

During his visit, Grandi also called for more help from the international community. He said that the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is discussing various options with the Jordanian government to provide humanitarian assistance to the people at the Berm.
