There’s a calm here he thought he’d lost forever. Two years ago in Nigeria, terror came to his doorstep.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hawali Oumar, Nigerian Refugee:
“I was heading out at four am. I wondered why my father hadn’t returned from his morning prayers. I heard gunfire. Boko Haram attacked my town. They killed my father.”
His family ran in different directions. They found their way to a refugee camp in Chad, but lost sight of their 18-year-old daughter Mariam.
They thought she was dead.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hawa Abakar, Nigerian Refugee:
“It was very difficult. I was walking around searching for her. I didn't know what to do. I felt helpless. We stayed for a long time without any news about her.”
But Mariam had survived, escaping to Cameroon.
SOUNDBITE (Hausa) Mariam Mohamed, Nigerian Refugee:
“I was thinking about my parents. I didn’t know whether they were alive or not.”
Nearly two years went by – and then --- they found each other.
