40th Plenary Meeting of General Assembly 71st Session
The General Assembly met today to elect members of the International Law Commission, the United Nations organ tasked with the progressive development of international law and its codification.
Voting by way of secret ballot, the Assembly elected a total of 34 individuals to serve five-year terms of office with the Geneva-based body, beginning on 1 January 2017. They constituted eight nationals from African States; seven from Asia-Pacific States; four from Eastern European States; seven from Latin American and Caribbean States; and eight from Western European and Other States.
From African States, it elected Ahmed Laraba (Algeria), Tacouba Cissé (Côte d’Ivoire), Dire D. Tladi (South Africa), Chris Maina Peter (United Republic of Tanzania), Hussein A. Hassouna (Egypt), S. Amos Wako (Kenya), Charles C. Jalloh (Sierra Leone) and Hassan Ouazzani Chahdi (Morocco).
From Asian States, it elected Ali bin Fetais Al-Marri (Qatar), Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud (Jordan), Huikang Huang (China), Shinya Murase (Japan), Hong Thao Nguyen (Viet Nam), Ki Gab Park (Republic of Korea) and Aniruddha Rajput (India).
From Eastern European States, it elected Bogdan Aurescu (Romania), Roman Anatolyevitch Kolodkin, (Russian Federation), Ernest Petrič (Slovenia) and Pavel Šturma (Czech Republic).
From Latin American and Caribbean States, it elected Carlos Argüello Gómez (Nicaragua), Juan Manuel Gómez-Robledo (Mexico), Claudio Grossman Guiloff (Chile), Juan José Ruda Santolaria, (Peru), Gilberto Vergne Saboia (Brazil), Eduardo Valencia-Ospina (Colombia) and Marcelo Vázquez-Bermúdez (Ecuador).
From Western European and Other States, it elected Concepción Escobar Hernández (Spain), Patrícia Galvão Teles (Portugal), Marja Lehto (Finland), Sean David Murphy (United States), Georg Nolte (Germany), Nilüfer Oral (Turkey), August Reinisch (Austria) and Michael Wood (United Kingdom).
