A vaccination campaign against cholera was conducted on Tuesday (8 Nov) at the Hopital Immaculee Conception, in Les Cayes, one of the areas of Haiti hit hard by Hurricane Matthew.
The campaign is being supported by the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and others.
UNICEF’s Chief Emergency Officer in Haiti, Akhil Iyer, emphasised that cholera needs to be tackled “on multiple fronts.”
He said implementing a successful vaccination campaign “is only one of the fronts” in the fight against cholera” and stressed the need for clean and safe water and other hygienic measures.
The PAHO / WHO Representative for Haiti, Dr. Jean-Luc Poncelet, said security and accessibility are the main challenges for this vaccination campaign.
Poncelet said “there are areas of the country that are not easy to access. Even before the hurricane it was kind of difficult, but the hurricane has complicated very it very seriously. So, road transport, bridges, etc., is a serious difficulty.”
He stressed that “we have to ensure that there is no trouble; that the people can access without having interference from demonstrations or other adverse situations.”
According to a news release from PAHO / WHO, the decision of WHO and other members of the Global Task Force for Cholera Control to approve the request of the Haitian Ministry of Health (MSPP) to bring one million doses of oral vaccine against cholera is based on the goal of reducing the burden of cholera cases on health care facilities, and of reducing deaths in the departments of the Sud and Grand’Anse.
