36. Various shots, people at crossing point waiting in the cold
Freezing winter temperatures have already arrived in Ukraine. All along the tense line that separates government-controlled territory from the non-government-held area in the east, people in small towns face dire conditions – often living in war-damaged buildings and lacking heat and electricity.
Crossing the line at one of a handful of crossing points can involve a long, cold wait.
Cold, hard waits are a reality at the Maryinka crossing point. Here it can take 7, even 10 hours to go across into the non-government controlled sector. Thousands stand patiently every day, to see relatives, to check damaged houses they’ve had to abandon. But the cold takes its toll.
SOUNDBITE (Russian), Alla, local resident:
“Look at these people. They’re disabled, they’re old, standing in line. I saw people yesterday walking with crutches. Just come and see in winter. Nothing will change. Crowds will line up, waiting until they cross.”
The towns nearby are a portrait of desolation. Houses half-destroyed by shells, bullets and fire. People flee.
In Nevelskoye, just 44 people are left. Ludmila is one. She surveys her winter heat supply for the four generations of family here. Briquettes to burn made of sunflower seeds and husks, supplied by an NGO.
SOUNDBITE (Russian), Ludmila, Local Resident:
“This is the first time we received briquets, but of course it won’t be enough for the winter.”
In the next room, her daughter-in-law Natalia also prepares. A rocket hit the house last year. The photos tell the story. Her three grandchildren were injured when the roof collapsed. The family has repaired two rooms but…
SOUNDBITE (Russian), Natalia, Local Resident:
“If we don’t have enough fuel, it’ll be cold inside the house. All the windows are broken.”
Natalia folds the mountain of winter clothes the family will need. Some have been donated.
SOUNDBITE (Russian), Natalia, Local Resident:
“We’re OK for clothes. It’s the children who are growing.”
The storage cellar in the yard is the refuge for Natalia and her family, often during shelling, and this winter to keep warm.
SOUNDBITE (Russian), Natalia, Local Resident:
“If there’s not enough heat, we’ll come here because the room is smaller and it heats up more quickly.”
Down the road in Severnoe, Liuda complains to a representative of the NGO Proliska that the village seems to have been forgotten. She and others can’t get any money to repair their broken houses.
Proliska works with UNHCR and last year provided 60,000 people with winter assistance. This year so far there’s not enough donated fuel.
SOUNDBITE (Russian) Irina Sinitsa, Local NGO:
“We don’t have it enough and there are still a lot of families left without coal and without anything to heat their houses.”
In this landscape of destruction, the forests are mined and people can’t collect wood for fuel. The cold once again becomes an enemy. And, despite their fortitude, many here don’t have the proper weapons to fight it.
