Storyline

The United Nations has called on the need for dialogue, reconciliation and healing, in Yei, while saying it is intensifying humanitarian support to the people in the area.

A high level team led by UN Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan Eugene Owusu visited the southern town Yei Wednesday (30 Nov) where the security situation deteriorated rapidly after renewed conflict broke out in early July.

Thousands remain displaced – many without access to lifesaving assistance.

The team was there to get a first-hand assessment of the needs of the affected populations.

After a meeting with the Yei governor, Owusu said the UN will work with local authorities on the ground to get relief aid to the people in need.

He said he urged the governor “to ensure the guns are silent because the people of Yei what they need first and foremost is peace.”

After his meeting with the delegation, the Bishop of Yei Erkulano Ladu called for security and peace in Yei Town saying that this will make people work hard for their sustenance.

Bishop Ladu said “we need security and peace, peace will make people work hard, working in such a way that they will produce whatever they need for their sustain and once people has their own sustain even the cry of the people right away now that the economic situation is harsh will be overcome.”

During meeting with internally displaced people, Betty, an internally displaced resident of Yei said “I want our government to think about us especially here in Yei and stop the war so that we can have some rest.”

Tensions and insecurity in Yei town located South of Sudan close to the border of Uganda, have persisted after conflict erupted in the country in mid-July. Even today, most shops remain closed and homes deserted as population continues to flee the area.
