5. SOUNDBITE (English) maj. Gen. Chaoying Yang, UNMISS Acting Force Commander:
“Gender equality will have been achieved when women do not experience violence in their home. Shared unpaid care work with men and are represented at the highest levels of business and politics. Unfortunately no country in the world has achieved gender equality totally today and the pace of change is frustratingly slow. For decades, women have advocated for equal rights but without the support of men, equality would not have been achieved.”

The members of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) took a part in a worldwide campaign against gender based violence “He for She” by signing a commitment form that says, “I am one of billions who believe that everyone is born free and equal. I will take action against gender bias, discrimination and violence to bring the benefits of equality to us all.”
The Acting UNMISS Force Commander Maj. Gen. Chaoying Yang told peacekeepers under his command they must all work harder to see that gender equality is achieved for all.
He said “gender equality will have been achieved when women do not experience violence in their home.”
Maj. Gen. Chaoying Yang encouraged all present to let the change begin with them by committing to taking action.
The pledge ceremony ended with the UNMISS Acting SRSG and UNMISS Chief of Staff joining the UNMISS Force and civilian staff in crossing their hands in support for the He for She campaign.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence campaign ends on December 10, 2016, a day which is also commemorated worldwide as Human Rights Day.
