Storyline

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (7 Dec) said the situation in Aleppo is “heart-breaking” and that in the absence of a political solution, the United Nations has been “really trying to provide life-saving, life-sustaining humanitarian support to many people who have been stranded.”

Talking to reporters in Vienna after a meeting with Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sebastian Kurz, Ban said “we have to have a sustainable cessation of hostilities so that we can have some respite, so that we can help those people.”

He noted that despite difficulties, the UN has been providing life-saving humanitarian assistance to “at least to more than five million people per month,” as well as medical supplies to “more than seven million people.”

Ban said “most of the infrastructures, hospitals, clinics, water supply, and food supply, have been cut-off” and stressed that this is a “very serious humanitarian crisis.”

He said that he has urged “the Syrian authorities and Syrian armed groups, and also coalition partners, to keep their promise so that we can do our proper humanitarian work in the absence of a political solution.”

On Monday, the United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a resolution calling for a seven-day ceasefire in Aleppo that would allow humanitarian aid to reach people trapped in the war-ravaged Syrian city.
