Storyline

United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi visited Niger where he travelled to the Diffa region, an area with over 250,000 people displaced by the militant group Boko Haram.

This includes refugees, returning Nigerien citizens and people forcibly displaced within the country’s borders. In Diffa, Grandi visited innovative projects supporting refugees and the communities who’ve taken them in.

Support has brought innovation to the refugees and the local communities, like the use of cooking gas. Grandi said this saves money and time and is more secure in this dangerous environment.

Grandi aims to call attention to the needs of more than 2 million people displaced across the region by Boko Haram, and urge the world to act.

The visit to Niger is part of a ten day trip including Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria to call attention to the needs of more than 2 million people displaced by Boko Haram in the Lake Chad Basin.
