UNICEF commemorated 70 years of work for children Monday evening12 Dec) with the help of some of the organization’s best-known Goodwill Ambassadors and celebrity advocates at a ‘children’s takeover’ event co-hosted by 12-year-old Millie Bobby Brown and featuring children and young people who have benefited directly from UNICEF’s efforts.
The celebration at United Nations headquarters in New York featured UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors Ishmael Beah, David Beckham, Orlando Bloom, Jackie Chan, Angelique Kidjo, Femi Kuti, and Priyanka Chopra.
UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said “achieving results, renewing hope for children is what UNICEF does,” before handing the anniversary celebration to the next generation of young celebrities and other young people who guest hosted the event.
People’s Choice nominee and star of hit television series Stranger Things Millie Bobby Brown served as the evening’s co-host and interviewed international soccer star David Beckham about what he has seen and learned over the course of his 11-years as a Goodwill Ambassador.
Beckham said “my wish for children is to have the same opportunities as my children have, as our children have, and what you have: the bright opportunities, the opportunities to live their lives, the opportunities to be given a chance in life.”
World-renowned actress and girls’ rights advocate Priyanka Chopra, whose appointment as UNICEF’s newest global Goodwill Ambassador was announced at the event, said “I recently read a quote somewhere that being human is given, but keeping our humanity is our choice. So let’s choose humanity.”
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom conducted an onstage discussion with child refugee Mustafa Al Said, who fled conflict in his native Syria and now lives in Germany.
Mustafa wished all children “friends, family and hope.”
Kids United, a French musical group of children aged between 8 and 16 years, performed John Lennon’s song Imagine.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a recorded message where he recalled his childhood in Korea.
He said he was “one of millions of Korean children who received food packets rom UNICEF” and as Secretary-General, he has “wanted to do for other children what the UN did for me.”
