Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (14 Dec) took part in several events commemorating the end of his tenure.
At a concert by the New York Philharmonic in his honour, Ban said it had been “an extraordinary honour” to serve the United Nations.
He said he had been “exposed to indescribable suffering” which had left him “shocked, and sometimes despairing and heartbroken,” but had also seen “the best of humanity, courage, resilience and compassion and creativity and global solidarity.”
Earlier today, together with Madame Ban, the Secretary-General unveiled a new portrait of him, painted by the Korean artist Lee Won-Hee, to hang alongside those of his predecessors in the Secretariat lobby.
He also took part in a special meeting of the Security Council, which adopted a resolution paying tribute to him.
Council President Román Oyarzun Marchesi, of Spain, paid tribute “to the perseverance, devotion, and flexibility” displayed by Ban in the performance of his duties.
In his own remarks, Ban said the Council “holds the key to peace and progress for some of the world’s most vulnerable people.”
He also emphasized that the Council is strongest when it is united, and noted that when unity is lacking, the consequences can be catastrophic, as in the case of South Sudan and Syria.
On Monday (12 Dec) Ban was honoured by the General Assembly. In his remarks to that organ he said “I have maintained a focus on people’s dignity and rights, the pillars of our common humanity. I have sought to stand up for the vulnerable and those left behind today. And I have tried to be sure that we are doing all we can so that future generations can live in peace. Even as I prepare to leave, my heart will stay as it has since I was a child – right here with the United Nations.”
