Storyline

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) approved US$33 million for new investments in Colombia to help the country overcome the effects of its 50-year internal conflict.

Colombia's conflict that began in 1960's has caused more than 250,000 deaths, displaced almost six million people and has also set back development in rural Colombia.

IFAD launched its Trust and Opportunities Project in 2014 to explore ways to tackle inequality and poverty in rural areas, promote equal access to basic services, help rebuild trust in communities torn apart by the conflict and support financial and technical training.

The Fund believes that given the right conditions, small farmers could secure Colombia’s food sovereignty and make an enormous contribution to global food security.

The project targets approximately 50,000 rural families living in extreme poverty across 17 departments in Colombia and involves $ 69.9 million investment.
