Description

Reiterating its request to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia to complete its work and facilitate its closure as expeditiously as possible, the Security Council today unanimously adopted resolution 2329 (2016).

By that text, the 15-member body decided to extend the terms of office of seven of the Tribunal’s permanent judges — members of the Trial Chamber and the Appeals Chamber — until 30 November 2017, or until the completion of the cases to which they were or would be assigned.

The Council also decided to reappoint Serge Brammertz as the Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanisms for Criminal Tribunals effective 1 January 2017 until 30 November 2017, subject to earlier termination by the Security Council upon the completion of the Tribunal’s work.

Following the vote, the representative of the Russian Federation expressed concern about delays in the Tribunal’s activities. The text reflected the Tribunal’s commitment to complete its judicial work, and emphasized that the extensions and reappointments of judges and prosecutors’ terms would be final.
