Storyline

Nearly six million Syrian children are in need of urgent life-saving assistance after five years of war, according to Unicef – the United Nations Children’s Fund.

More than two-thirds of Syrians in the region do not have regular access to water. Communities hosting refugees across the region are under extraordinary pressure.

At least 40,000 people fled the intense fighting in east Aleppo since 24 November. Some 7,000 displaced persons are currently housed in an industrial area and a further 2,000 in a cotton factory nearby on the outskirts of Aleppo. Others moved to the northern Kurdish dominated city district of Sheik. An estimated 16,000 people have returned to Hanano, and other areas in east Aleppo retaken recently by Government of Syria forces.

UNICEF and partners are responding with immediate life-saving assistance by trucking safe water to families in shelters on a daily basis, immunizing children and providing primary health care, screening and treatment of malnutrition in children, as well as psychosocial support and mine risk education.
