Storyline

The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affaires Jeffrey Feltman briefed today the UN Security Council on the progress of the implementation of the Council’s resolution 2231, adopted in July 2015, which set in motion the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or more commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal.

The JCPOA was agreed between Iran and P5+1 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) and European. Under the agreement, Iran is to reduce its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from the nuclear-related international economic sanctions.

Feltman said “it is imperative that its participants, the United Nations and the broader international community continue to support the full implementation of this historic multilateral agreement for its full duration.”

The dismantling of Iran’s nuclear facilities and disposal of its enriched uranium stockpile is monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency which had so far submitted five reports on the progress of the JCPOA and Iran’s actions on its nuclear-related commitments.

Speaking on behalf of The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy who is also the Coordinator of the Joint Commission established by the JCPOA, Joao Vale de Almeida, Head of Delegation of the European Union to the UN said “Iran's adherence to its commitments is being closely monitored and was confirmed by four IAEA reports up to now.”

De Almeida also pointed out that “the lifting of sanctions has also led to a surge in trade and investment with Iran.”

Over the first three quarters of 2016, bilateral trade between the EU and Iran has risen by 63 percent.

Speaking also at the meeting, the outgoing Permanent Representative of the USA to the UN Samantha Power called on the Council’s members to follow up on the other provisions of the resolution 2231.

Power said that “even though Iran is living up to its nuclear commitments, we, on the Council, need to come together to push Iran to effectively implement binding provisions of the resolution 2231, especially restrictions that ban Iran‘s export of arms and related material and that ban all member states from transferring to Iran advanced weapon systems like missiles, tanks and combat aircraft.”
