Finally, we must proceed to reform our administration. We are too often hindered by our own regulations. We haven’t optimized the mechanisms and procedures that we need. I think we have everything to gain by adopting a simplified, decentralized and flexible apparatus anchored in a culture of transparency and respect of the principle of accountability. This aims at improving our ability to support the member states on the ground.”

Storyline

Speaking at a high-level event on sustainable peace, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General said “the best means of prevention, and of sustaining peace, is inclusive and sustainable development.”

In order to signify the essential bonds between the 2030 Agenda and the concept of Sustaining Peace, the President of the General Assembly Peter Thomson convened today (24 Jan) a high-level dialogue entitled “Building Sustainable Peace for All: Synergies between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustaining Peace Agenda” at UN headquarters in New York.

Opening the event, Thomson said “If we are to meet the 2030 Agenda’s central tenet of leaving no-one behind, it is incumbent upon us to reach out to all of those people affected by conflict and fragility. Simultaneously, we must prevent millions more from having their lives and their livelihood destroyed by future violence and conflict.”

The objective of the event is to enhance greater understanding on how Sustaining Peace relates to the 2030 Agenda, discuss the linkages between Sustaining Peace and the 2030 Agenda across SDG targets, as well as to consider the role that women and youth in particular can play in the effort to implement the 2030 Agenda and to sustain peace.

Speaking after the GA President, Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations highlighted how “the effects of climate change, population growth, rapid urbanization, and environmental degradation are contributing to greater competition for resources, adding to tensions and instability."

Guterres said “whole communities, sectors of society and even countries feel forgotten and left behind.” He said his organization’s priority is prevention – “prevention of conflict, of the worst effects of natural disasters, and of other manmade threats to the cohesion and wellbeing of societies. The best means of prevention, and of sustaining peace, is inclusive and sustainable development.”

He also highlighted that “the total economic benefit from implementing the 2030 agenda runs to tens of trillions of dollars in business savings and revenue” which in turn represents “an enormous investment opportunity for the corporate sector, whose contribution will be vital for innovation, improved skills, job creation, and developing new markets, products and services.”

The newly appointed UN chief also spoke about his plans to overhaul the United Nations administration which is“too often hindered by our own regulations.”

He added in “I think we have everything to gain by adopting a simplified, decentralized and flexible apparatus anchored in a culture of transparency and respect of the principle of accountability.”

The President of the Security Council, the President of the Economic and Social Council, and the Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission also participated in the dialogue.
