The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, today (31 Jan) witnessed first-hand, what he said was the immense scale of urgent humanitarian needs in Homs, Syria.
Fighting in Homs, until it ended in April 2014 took a heavy toll on the Old City, leaving it in ruins. Still, residents have been returning to try to rebuild their lives.
Rebuilding 4 years of damaged infrastructure might come with time.
But fixing the lives of people destroyed by war is a much bigger task.
United Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees visited Homs for the first time since the war started.
He stopped at a shelter offering a home to those who lost theirs.
UPSOUND (English) Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner for Refugees, United Nations (UNHCR):
“And here what are the main problems or needs?”
UPSOUND (Arabic) Rabea al-Rifae, displaced Syrian, speaking in background:

No heating, just layers of clothes, signals Rabea who has been displaced for over 4 years.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Rabea al-Rifae, displaced Syrian:
“We live here like other people who lost their homes.”
But years of brutal war have left much to heal.
At a local community centre funded by UNHCR, Filippo Grandi heard about programmes that help the vulnerable.
UPSOUND (Arabic) Social worker speaking to Filippo Grandi:
“We help 1500 youth who suffer from panic because there are many empty neighbourhoods, they walk around, always checking what’s behind them.”
Grandi was shown the empty and damaged parts of the city.
An apocalyptic landscape, but living among the rubble is the future of Homs.
The next generation is calling for help to turn the page.
