9. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations:
“It is my duty to meet with all members of the Security Council and members of the United Nations, especially if that member is of the calibre of the United States of America. We had a tradition of discussion as professionals with previous US representatives, at least in my tenure, some of them from the Republican side, some of them from the Democratic side. I am eager to continue in the same path with the Ambassador of the United States.”

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour today (01 Feb) met with the President of the Security Council and the Chairman of the Arab Group to discuss the latest Israeli settlement activity and implementation of Security Council Resolution 2334.
Speaking to reporters outside the Council, Mansour stressed the need of the Security Council “to shoulder its responsibility to bring Israel into compliance with its obligations.”
The Palestinian Ambassador said “the international community spoke clearly and loudly when they adopted 2334. The adoption of 2334 was a significant effort in the direction of peace to save the two-state solution when it indicated that settlements are illegal and the main obstacle in the path to the two-state solution.”
He told reporters that in January “six thousand units during that course in ten days is unprecedented and it exceeded the number of units that were approved during the course of 2016.”
Speaking on relation with the new US Administration, Mansour said “it is my duty to meet with all members of the Security Council and members of the United Nations, especially if that member is of the calibre of the United States of America. We had a tradition of discussion as professionals with previous US representatives, at least in my tenure, some of them from the Republican side, some of them from the Democratic side. I am eager to continue in the same path with the Ambassador of the United States.”
With the adoption of resolution 2334 in December, the Security Council reaffirmed that Israel’s establishment of settlements in Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, had no legal validity, constituting a flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the vision of two States living side-by-side in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders.
