Storyline

United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) chief Filippo Grandi said more help was needed to support refugees displaced by the violence in Syria adding that “even small” donations were very useful.

Over the weekend, Grandi visited a refugee settlement in the Lebanese Bekka Valley after ending his first visit to Syria since the beginning of the conflict. The settlement is housing some 60 families most of whom are agricultural workers. He said some 400 refugees in Lebanon were ready to resettle in the United States but were blocked by the recent executive order issued by the new American administration.

The High Commissioner also visited a school in the area with Lebanese Education Minister Marwan Hamadeh where he was briefed on a local plan to educate Syrian refugee children in morning and afternoon shifts. Grandi praised Lebanon’s support for Syrian refugee children, and called for continued international assistance for their education and health. He said more resources needed to be injected into educating refugee children as “only about a half go to school.”
