“Unfortunately it is not getting any better by the look of it. We have operation and fighting both in the South and unfortunately in the upper Nile State as well. We need a peace agreement, we need peace. That is the most fundamental element that is missing in South Sudan and when that happens then you will be able to start creating the conditions for people who have fled their homes to go back.”

Storyline

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in South Sudan, David Shearer, visited towns of Bentiu and Leer in Unity State, where the UN is sheltering over 100,000 people displaced by fighting.

Referring to the renewal of the fighting throughout the country, Shearer said the situation “is not getting any better by the look of it.”

Special Representative also said the peace is “the most fundamental element that is missing in South Sudan and when that happens then you will be able to start creating the conditions for people who have fled their homes to go back.”

Bentiu and Leer are two towns which have been amongst the most affected by three years of fighting.

While in Bentiu, Shearer met state government officials, as well as internally displaced people who are living in the largest protection of civilians’ site in the country.

In Leer, he visited the mission’s temporary operating base to assess UNMISS’ success in mounting robust patrols which push the mission’s presence deep into the field.

Shearer talked with local officials and also traveled to opposition-controlled area to meet with rebel representatives in order to facilitate humanitarian assistance and advance the peace process.
