Storyline

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said today (10 Feb) ongoing violence in South Sudan has made the country Africa’s largest refugee crisis as thousands continued to pour into neighbouring Uganda.

Uganda is already hosting over half a million of South Sudan’s 1.5 million refugees which have been forced to leave their homes and seek safety since the country’s conflict erupted in December 2013 and more continue to cross the border each day.

Sida and her six children ran away after their village was attacked.

SOUNDBITE (Kakwa) Sidah Hawa, South Sudanese Refugee:
“I had just planted some crops. I was waiting to harvest. I lost everything because of the war. They are killing people. Many have died. I was scared for my life.”

According to UNHCR, more than 52,000 refugees have been received in Uganda since January 2017. The agency said the majority of South Sudanese were crossing at border entry points such as Busia to find refuge, however many were using informal entry points citing the presence of armed groups on the routes to the main border points.

Raimon Towongo fled for his life, barely escaping on an old bicycle. He too lost everything.

SOUNDBITE (Kiswahili) Raimon Towongo, South Sudanese Refugee:
“Look at me. I’m wearing torn, dirty clothes. We risked our lives sleeping in the bush. This is a terrible situation.”

UNHCR said refugees in Uganda are registered, given small plots of land, building materials and food rations, all within three days. However, the agency stressed that resources were being stretched. In 2016, the humanitarian appeal for the South Sudan response received less than 75 percent of the funds needed to meet the demands. UNHCR said without further contributions, the abilities of the humanitarian response to provide critical aid and key basic services could become severely compromised.
