Storyline

The United Nations Security Council condemned today (13 Feb) the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) ballistic missile launch which landed in the Japan Sea on Saturday adding that such actions were in grave violation of its obligations under international law.

Following a closed meeting of the Council on the issue, Ukrainian ambassador Volodymyr Yelchenko told reporters that members of the Security Council deplored “all” the DPRK’s ballistic missile activities noting that such activities contribute to the country’s “development of nuclear weapons delivery systems and increase tension.” Yelchenko, whose country is currently presiding over the Council, said members “regretted” that the DPRK was “diverting resources to the pursuit of ballistic missiles” while its “citizens have great unmet needs.”

Yelchenko said the Council also expressed serious concern that the DPRK conducted the launch following several similar launches since April of last year and a nuclear test in September “in flagrant disregard of the repeated statements of the Security Council” and reiterated that the country “shall refrain from further actions, including nuclear tests, in violation of the relevant Security Council resolutions, and comply fully with its obligations under these resolutions.”

Japanese ambassador Koro Bessho described the meeting as a “good discussion” adding that Council Members were “very unanimous in saying that obviously we have to implement the very robust strong resolution that we already have.” He said the Council would “keep on watching the situation very seriously.”
